A Frozen Puddle

What is it about the frozen puddles
of spring that call to my inner child?

I just need to  walk out onto
that surface.....carefully......slowly.....
Study the bubbles trapped in that thin layer of ice
Don't you wonder how that happens?
To feel the glide of my feet as they
skate across that pristine glass surface

holding my breath the momentary weightlessness
.... waiting for the inevitable...the crack that you can feel
...it starts with a tremor, the gripping sensation you get
just before the bottom falls out
It gives my heart a thrill every time
to test the skill of my feet
to see how long I can skate before it all cracks up
and when it does, can I make it to the other side
before I fall in entirely...
It brings to mind the memories of my childhood
In the springtime we would always leave the house
just a little earlier, we had a long walk to the bus
...so many frozen puddles along the way,
so little time to play....
